AI Psychosis & Chatbot Delusion Lawsuit

AI Chatbot Delusions, Psychosis, and Addiction: You May Have Legal Options

People across the country say AI chatbots told them what they wanted to hear, fed their wildest beliefs, and kept them talking until they lost touch with reality. Some ended up hospitalized. Some did not survive.

Whether this happened to you or someone you love, you are not alone, and you may have legal options.

Fill out a short form and a member of our team will call you to talk through what happened. If you or someone you love is in crisis right now, call or text 988 (Suicide & Crisis Lifeline). In an emergency, call 911. This page offers legal information, not medical advice.

When a chatbot agrees with everything

AI chatbots are built to keep a conversation going, and many are tuned to agree with the person typing. For many people, that makes for a friendly assistant. For some, it has meant something else: a chatbot that treated a false belief as true, praised it, and built on it, night after night.

People describe chatbots that told them they had made a world-changing discovery, that they had been chosen for a special mission, that they were being watched, or that the chatbot itself was alive and in love with them. Some stopped sleeping. Some pulled away from family and friends. Some lost jobs, savings, and businesses. Some ended up in the hospital.

Signs it may have started with a chatbot

Clinicians have not settled on one name for this. The press and many doctors call it "AI psychosis." What families describe is specific:

  • Hours-long conversations with a chatbot, often late at night, day after day
  • A new, firmly held belief that does not fit the person's life before: a hidden truth, a breakthrough, a mission, a conspiracy
  • A chatbot that agreed, praised, or escalated instead of pushing back
  • Growing distance from family, friends, school, or work
  • Compulsive use that is hard to stop, even when it is causing harm
  • A crisis: a break with reality, hospitalization, self-harm, or a death
  • Money problems: a lost job or business, mounting debt, bankruptcy

Our attorneys are investigating claims for people harmed by AI chatbots. This is not a class action. Each person's harm is different, so each claim is evaluated on its own merits.

Who may be able to bring a claim

  • Hours-long conversations with a chatbot, often late at night, day after day
  • A new, firmly held belief that does not fit the person's life before: a hidden truth, a breakthrough, a mission, a conspiracy
  • A chatbot that agreed, praised, or escalated instead of pushing back
  • Growing distance from family, friends, school, or work
  • Compulsive use that is hard to stop, even when it is causing harm
  • A crisis: a break with reality, hospitalization, self-harm, or a death
  • Money problems: a lost job or business, mounting debt, bankruptcy
  • Adults who developed delusions, mania, or psychosis after heavy chatbot use
  • People who were hospitalized or went through a mental health crisis tied to chatbot use
  • People whose compulsive chatbot use led to serious harm, such as a lost job, a lost business, or bankruptcy
  • Family members of someone who was harmed, including families who lost a loved one. You do not need a diagnosis, and you do not need to be certain a chatbot caused what happened. A prior mental health condition does not automatically rule out a claim. If a chatbot made things worse, that may matter.

Who we are

Protect your evidence

Chat logs are some of the most important evidence in these cases. If this happened to you or someone you love:

  • Do not delete chats or close the account.
  • Most chatbot apps let you export or download your history in settings. If you can, do it now.
  • Save screenshots, hospital and doctor records, bills, and financial records.
  • Do not log into someone else's account without their permission. Tell us what you have and we will explain next steps.

By completing this form, you agree to Clarkson Law Firm’s Privacy Policy, and to be contacted by Clarkson Law Firm via phone, email, or text regarding your submission.

Not sure you qualify? Submit anyway. We will review your situation and tell you where you stand.

Frequently Asked Questions

It is a term used in the press and by some clinicians for delusional thinking, mania, or a break from reality that develops or worsens alongside heavy chatbot use. It is not a formal diagnosis, and we are lawyers, not doctors. A medical professional can speak to what you or your loved one is experiencing. What we look at is what the chatbot said and did, and what happened next.
Yes. Lawsuits over chatbot-related mental health harm are already pending. Courts are still working out how product liability, negligence, and consumer protection laws apply to chatbots, and outcomes are not guaranteed. These claims ask whether a company designed, tested, and warned about its product responsibly.
No. This is a mass tort, which means many individuals each bring their own injury claim against the same companies. In a class action, people are included automatically unless they opt out. Here, you are not included unless you take action to bring a claim. Your harm, your records, and your damages are evaluated individually. Related cases may be coordinated before one judge to save time, but any compensation is based on your own situation.
Possibly. A prior condition does not automatically rule out a claim. It does mean your medical history will matter, and we will talk through that with you.
Family members may be able to bring a claim in some situations, including wrongful death claims after a loss. Who can bring a claim depends on state law and your relationship to the person. We are sorry for what you are going through. Tell us what happened and we will explain who may be able to act. If your child is a minor, see our page for parents: [link to parent-focused page].

Many of the public lawsuits so far involve ChatGPT, and others involve companion apps and other chatbots. The issue is not limited to one product. We want to hear about any AI chatbot or companion app, including general assistants and character apps. Tell us which one you used on the form.

Logs are some of the most important evidence, but you can still reach out without them. Many chatbot companies let you request or export your history, and we can explain how. Please do not delete anything.

Talking with us about your situation costs nothing, and we do not charge up-front legal fees. If we take your case, the firm is paid a percentage of any recovery under a written agreement that explains how fees and case costs are handled. You will see that agreement before you decide.

A member of our team will call you to talk through what happened. If you are not sure whether your situation counts, submit anyway. Reviewing it costs nothing, and you are not obligated to do anything. Deadlines for filing a lawsuit, called statutes of limitations, vary by state, and we will tell you which may apply to you.
