Apple built its reputation on a promise: that it would protect your privacy when other companies wouldn't. Millions of people paid for iCloud+, in part, because of that promise, because they believed Private Relay was supposed to keep their real IP address and location hidden from the sites they visit.

Clarkson Law Firm has filed a class action lawsuit against Apple, alleging that promise was broken.

What Private Relay Was Supposed to Do

Private Relay is a paid iCloud+ feature. Once turned on, it's supposed to route your Safari browsing through two secure relays so that no one — not your network provider, not the websites you visit, not even Apple — can see both who you are and what you're looking at.

What Our Lawsuit Alleges

Security researchers recently disclosed a flaw that lets many websites see a Private Relay user's real IP address anyway, even while the feature is switched on. Our complaint alleges Apple knew, or should have known, that the challenged representations were false, misleading, deceptive, and unlawful at the time it sold iCloud+ subscriptions.

Clarkson partner Tim Giordano said about the case, “Apple built its entire brand on the promise that it would protect its users’ privacy when no other company would. For Apple’s iCloud users to now learn that for years they were paying Apple a premium for a protection that simply didn’t work, exposing them to the very tracking, profiling, and targeting Apple warned them about, is an outrageous violation and betrayal of consumer trust and law.”

This isn't the first time Clarkson has held Apple accountable for what it promises consumers. The firm previously secured a $250 million settlement over Apple's delayed rollout of personalized Siri features.
